The School of Health Sciences and Social Work wishes to appoint a research leader in vision sciences, who is also able to provide innovative and inspiring leadership for our planned patient facing optometry services.  The School of Health Sciences and Social Work has an established profile in the sector, which is now growing with the addition of a number of exciting, new subject areas. Vision sciences plays an integral part of this growth in our academic profile and is supported by team of dedicated and talented staff within optometry and the wider school.  The post holder will maintain a leadership role that focuses on vision science, but also influences numerous other areas of the school and its work. 

Candidates will have a substantial international research profile as evidenced by well-cited publications in leading journals and a track record of attracting research funding.  An ability to make connections between research areas and have a multi-disciplinary outlook is essential.  We are looking for a high-caliber individual with leadership capabilities, willing to share expertise and nurture others.

The post-holder will have opportunity to guide the strategic direction of vision science in Portsmouth, leading and working with a group of talented colleagues, in an ambitious and achieving school, enjoying strategic investment and growth.  The candidate will be expected to enthusiastically integrate research specialisms into teaching, while developing skills relevant to the graduate labour market, thus contributing to the School's strategy of skills-focused and research-informed teaching.

The School has a total of 85 staff, with all academic staff being research or innovation active. We have a number of research fellows and post-graduate research students. The School’s research culture is blossoming, with active research groups integrating specialisms spanning global health, social care, primary and secondary care. 

 

The School offers a range of pre-registration health and social care courses, which attract healthy numbers of good applicants and are growing within the international arena. The school is also active in supporting post-graduate students, including MRes, Professional Doctorate and PhD.
